The system of Education prepares new generation for the future. In democracy this role is taken over by the state therefore state is arranging. for the education. The new concept of education has emerged with the development of Indira Gandhi National Open University; Gujarat has also followed the same. It is this inspiration and tradition that has led to the establishment of "Open University" in the state. The Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU) was established by the Act No.14 of 1994 passed by the Gujarat State Legislature, and assented to by the Governor of Gujarat on 27th July, 1994.  The BAOU is the seventh Open University in the country.

           The development and acceptance of "Distance Education" both in the developed and developing countries is growing fast. The reason behind such acceptance is its flexibility approach and users friendly technique of education that can provide a viable alternative for every one who needs to pursue higher education further to expand his horizons of knowledge, to sharpen his\her existing learning to upgrade his knowledge, skill and training and thereby, to be a life-time learner and a fulfilling action.

            The university offers 30 programmes with an enrolment of about 85000 students. The headquarter of the university is located at Ahmedabad .We have established Regional Centre at Rajkot. The University has about 100 study centers. The university has jurisdiction over the whole state of Gujarat. It is open for all persons irrespective of classes, castes, creed, religion or sex.
